Landscape formulae

#dailyfail (landscapes)

Those formulaic “How To” instruction books for acrylic/watercolour/oil landscape/figure/portraiture/still life creep me out. Common sense suggests that a subject is a subject to be viewed, analysed, deconstructed and then reconstructed with shapes and colours and lines in whatever medium is to hand.

The reality is that there are nuggets of wisdom in relation to subject type and medium, and confronting off-track subject matter highlights deficencies in observation and technique because the old tried-and-tested quick-fix solutions don’t always translate. Painting landscapes from drawings and notes made in situ is more challenging than I anticipated. I keep telling myself that I’m building up material for future work, and it’s just about technique and observation practice, but the critical inner voice is having a field day.

Show opening

There is something very special about the opening of a show with new work. Stress is unavoidable in the few months leading up to it....
