Gillian Holding’s recent paintings are a continuing exploration of the body through figures that resist definition but assert themselves through gesture, weight and tension.  

Juxtaposed strangely positioned figures, objects and animals haunt the canvases. The presence of the unexpected in the imagery invites us to consider the surreal contradictions that characterise today’s world. We see increasing feelings of alienation, helplessness, fragility and entrapment encapsulated in these works through ambiguous imagery of forms lost and trapped in their surroundings.
