Flux

Back to the studio. The time of year when everything seems in flux including the making of art, both metaphorically and literally.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what it means to make (attempt) critically engaged painting. If not painting for the sake of paint (though it’s difficult to avoid this entirely because the reason for picking up a brush is precisely because the action of painting is in itself so compelling) then the painting has to be doing something as paint in terms of dealing with the content and underlying idea.

The materiality of paint -the way you can veil, uncover, layer, in a tangible way- is I think pretty crucial in answering the question “yes, but why paint?”.

So in this liminal interlude period between holiday season and autumnal art, it’s a good time to play with this notion of flux.
