Experiments with surface
In the build up to open studios and the group show, I find myself obsessed with the idea of doing something entirely unrelated and new, just to play around with a prepared canvas. It’s a nice canvas: carefully made by me, frame and all, to exacting degree tutor standard a while back and I admired my handiworkso much I could barely bring myself to mark it.
Some months ago, I covered part of the surface with oil primer and shape was suggestive of a figure. I’ve been gazing at this entirely subconscious shape for months now and decided it was time to let the brush go wandering to see what might happen.
It’ll be an interesting one to work on further on Sunday whilst people are coming and going. No reference materials, no plan: just responding to the thought of the moment.
