There is something very special about the opening of a show with new work. Stress is unavoidable in the few months leading up to it. However much work has been done, the decision to consider a painting “finished” is never easy. A self critical eye is constantly searching for passages to improve. It’s hard to get away from that instinct that everything could be better and nothing is ever ready enough.
Then the framing and stretching issues materialise. A single mm of tolerance has been missed and entire paintings need to be unstapled and restretched in order to fit a frame.
Waiting for the packers to arrive and take the paintings, worrying that there will be damage in transit. Tracking the transatlantic carrier information, worrying that the paintings will be lost. Clicking refresh on the delivery updates because the carrier decided to simply miss out that stop that day and then wondering what would actually happen if the work didn’t arrive in time for installation by the opening.
But it did! Opening tonight at Artifact Projects , 155 Suffolk Street, NY, NY.
Time to relax and enjoy the moment.
